Documenting sound system history since 2008.
-
Our mission is to document the early history of sound system design and culture in Belém do Pará, Brazil, and to share it with audiences around the world in a variety of engaging formats.
-
This project is a collaboration between US-based ethnomusicologist Darien Lamen and Belém-based DJ Junior Almeida, with the support of numerous community collaborators and media professionals.
-
We conduct ethnographic, archival, and oral history research with sound system professionals in Belém do Pará. Documenting and preserving is only one part of the process, however. We strive to find new and engaging ways of sharing this history with local and international audiences, including through documentary film production, panel discussions, community events, pop-up exhibits, and academic articles.
“I saw a need to go back, to find out where we came from, so we don’t become hostage to technology.”
— DJ Junior Almeida, project co-founder
